Varieties Of Leather Used

The Tudor Leather company utilizes many types of leathers, but the preferred variety is Italian veg tanned cow hides.  Veg tanned leather is one of the best types of leather for wallets, watch straps and bags, due to its versatility in application, beauty and ability to develop a patina over regular usage.

However, as all leathers begin as animal hides or skins, leather must be cared for to prolong the usable life and beauty.

Timing of Care

We recommend that you apply a leather conditioner every month or two as a general guideline.  However, you will be able to tell when leather needs to be treated with a conditioner.

Visit our page on how to apply Tudor Leather Conditioner by clicking here.

If you see any of the below occur to your wallet or strap, take action immediately to prevent further damage:

  • The top of the leather feels dry to the touch
  • Surface cracking or flaking
  • The leather has been submerged in water, or left with water on the surface

Conditioner Recommendations

You may have received a container of conditioner with your wallet, bag or watch strap.  This conditioner is made of a special blend of conditioning oil and two types of waxes.  While we recommend using our blend, you may choose to use one of the many commercial leather conditioners available today.

If you choose to use a different product, please test the product carefully before applying to the entire surface.  We cannot be responsible for the damage or discoloration from the use of non-Tudor Leather products.

Application

  • CLEAN - If possible, obtain some saddle soap, or glycerin leather soap to gently clean the surface of the leather.  We prefer to use glycerin leather soap by gently rubbing a damp cotton cloth with a light layer of soap across the surfaces of the leather.  Do not over wet, as this can damage the leather.
  • DRY - Your leather should not be wet, but give it a few minutes to dry any remaining dampness.
  • APPLY - Apply Tudor Leather Conditioner using a finger or soft cotton towell.  Apply evenly so that all the surfaces of the leather have a coating of conditioner.
  • HEAT - On the low setting, gently heat the surface of the leather with a hair dryer just so the conditioner soaks into the surface.  Remove from heat as soon as you see this happen.
  • WIPE - Gently wipe and buff the surface of the leather with a soft clean cotton fabric (an old tee shirt works great for this).

Avoid Water

It should be obvious, but do not expose your leather wallet to water.  Although still usable, we have seen wallets that go through the washing machine shrink and deform.

Do your best to treat your wallet with general care and it will last for years.
